Hi, Lary,

I've used a solution of Miracle-Gro in water in a spray bottle to turn a penny covered bowling ball verdigris. I imagine this would work for your copper pots too.

P.S. Very funny, GardnMemaw04!

If it was in its natural form it should already be green. Check that there is no laquer covering it. You would have to remove that first. Copper turns green pretty fast on it's own.

You make a solution of vinegar, salt and ammonia. Mix 1 cup of vinegar, 2-4 T salt (this is not an exact science) and maybe a quarter cup ammonia. Put the mixture in a spray bottle and spray your pot. Leave them dry in the air. Repeat as necessary until you have the color you want your copper to be. Joyce is right, though. Check to make sure it isn't lacquered. If not, and you follow these instructions, you may want to lacquer the pots yourself using Rustoleum spray lacquer (high gloss or matte are fine). Make sure that you only lightly coat the pots, and do several very light coats. The lacquer can dull the color and turn it brown if you overdo it. I'm an artist, and I use this method on my relief drawings in copper, and it works nicely.

Lemon juice

Thimble thumb has got it right! You can also suspend your copper in a covered container with the liquids on the bottom to achieve a nice patina. The consentration of chemicals and lack of oxygen oxidizes the surface at a faster rate. It will take some time though. When it is colored the way you want it, leave it be even longer. You must fix this oxidation onto the peice as this outer color is very fragile and will come off quite easly. You can try butchers wax applied in many thin layers. I have used lemon juice to clean copper to a bright shiny new surface, but ketchup works even better of pots and pans!!

I just bought a beautiful, used copper tea kettle that I want to heat water in, not for drinking, but for humidity control. How do I tell if it is covered with lacquer?
Is there some kind of test?
Thanks,
Bud

Beer will work

Don't pour the beer on the copper, just drink it and pee on the copper. Human urine is used by the pros when making repairs on antique copper roofs, etc.

the red color is the results of the corrosion of copper. the natural process requires a lot of time and the final color depends on the atmosphere or you can achieve something similar with chemicals.
