What branches to use for trellis?

I need to build 2 trellises for climbing vines - one for a Mothers' Day gift which will be 5 feet high and 4 feet wide. Juat a grid style with a scalloped top. The other will go up the sides and over the top of front (double) doors. Maybe like two ladders on the sides with a curved top to connect. It needs to be 7 1/2 feet high and the top connector would be about 6 1/2 feet.

I have woods behind my house but without going very deep into them the only thing I can find to use are maples. I also have grape vine to use as decorations on them, i.e. hearts, circles.

I also have access to pine but I wouldn't think that would be good to use and the sap would be a mess.

I've found lots of designs but very little information on what types of branches to use (I don't think I can get willow or birch).

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Debbi,
We used a mixture of maple, oak and birch when we built ours. The maple and oak has held up, but the birch got "punky" after 2 seasons, and crumbled away. So, the maple should be fine..I think the pine would rot quickly too...and with the addition of the grape vine should look great!
Good luck!

The large trellis for my front entry didn't get built. Since my morning glories and clematis that I thought I needed it for are not growing well I guess that's okay. I haven't had time to persue the idea lately.

I did get branch trellises made for my snap peas and Mom's growing vines. I am not happy with the stability of either.

Having said that - I didn't have much luck finding actual plans on the internet. Here are websites where I did get a little info.

When things settle down here I intend to hit the library to see what I can find there. Good luck with yours.
