Outdoor Swing?

Posted by blakeas 8 GA (My Page) on

I want to put up an outdoor bench swing out in my yard/forest area. I was trying to figure out how to build the posts that go into the ground and then the piece of wood that the swing would hand down on between the posts. Do I just use 4x4x8 pressure treated posts with a 4x6x8 going across? Please help!

I think that if you have never built one, you should google 'Porch swing', or 'garden swing', to see if you can find some free plans. If people are going to use it, the support needs to be substantial. Here's a picture of my swing. There are no plans for the support structure, but I have built several over the years.

You might also google 'Free Plans'.

Hope this helps.

My father made me one last year.

I agree with Jim, you have to make sure it is perfectly safe and well constructed if your family and friends plan on using it! You can also buy a lot of swing-arbors like this in kit form. It may put your mind at ease a bit more than improvising!
