Gnomes around the home?

Posted by iamcanadian Ontario Canada (My Page) on

I don't get this fasination with gnomes. I have heard that some have actually disappeared from gardens and have travelled great distances, only to someday reappear again.

Is there supposed to be something magical about them? Does each gnome have a special meaning? And why do people put them in their gardens? Are they supposed to ward off evil spirits or something?

They look like little santa elves to me, am I missing something by not having one in My garden? Is there supposed to be a family of them that one collects? or are they just random gnomes.

They are surpose to bring good luck to the garden and home. Started in the 1800's. I think they are ugly myself. The Kimmel Gnomes are a "collectors" item.

I have a "mooning" gnome! And 3 small ones climbing up a rope in an apple tree. For some reason they just seem to look really good in a shade garden. I have just started wanting to collect them. My mother got me the mooning one from some catalog, she also ordered a "squatting" gnome. But he was back ordered!

My ex-neighbours had them all. They were stolen several times and my neighbours posted hefty rewards for their safe return. Don't see the attraction myself, and thought they were nuts!

I think they're considered more as "kitsch" decor now than honest-to-goodness good luck tokens. Sort of like having a plastic pink flamingo (or two) in your lawn. ;-)

I had a small one with my Christmas stuff, like an elf. but my SIL had some and when they changed the garden theme in their new house, gave them to me...I have several that are plaster that are falling apart, oh well. 2 large ones that are kinda rubber that need repainting. I have 3-4 newer ones that are pastel colors and cute. I am gona clean up and put in my corner garden of my secret garden. Have one little cottage that I got from DD that she got for a gift from her MIL. No where to put. I have a small candle holder that could be a bird fountain and I am gona put it beside a mirror pond. I will also put a cherub that looks like a statue in a big garden. I am doing it for fun. do not believe in good luck tokens llike that...Just like some things. Might even find small glass items and make a glass totem for the little garden. Thought it might be fun to put a bonsia in the area also.
