Selecting a paint color

Hi all, I've not been on this forum for a while and just ran down the list of questions being asked about paint color.

I am by no means an expert in selecting a color, but I do have some advice that has proved helpful to me and people I have painted for.

First. Select colors for walls that you already have. (Pulling a color from a rug, curtain, lamp throw or anything else will do. If you want to get brave, select a color not easily noticed).

Second. Narrow your search to no more than four selections. (This will prevent you from getting overwhelmed. Some people can look at a color and instantly know it will work, others obsess for months. I look at it this way, if it doesn't work, paint over it).

Third. After narrowing your search down to two colors, pick the color that has the "highest light reflection". This quality allows the paint to play with available light.

Fourth. Use "tinted primer". This will allow you to save time and money. Tell the paint shop that you want a primer tinted to the color you are buying. This almost always guarantees that you will only need to use one coat of regular paint over the primer, plus, you have a surface that you know for sure is primed.

Fifth. Consider the same color throughout your house such as a white for the ceiling (flat) "super white" B.M. is excellent and a slightly dimmer white for trim and doors (semi-gloss) "dove white" is great.

Sixth. Break all of the rules. (I hate conformity).

Seventh. Have fun with the project. Painting has instant impact and not only makes your environment look better but it also makes you feel better..

Happy painting!
