Make a cover for the pot? You could use wood, or look around in your local hardware place for a nice sheet of copper or something.
Depending on the size of the pot, you might find an elastic bowl cover you could use to cover it- or make your own using heavy plastic and elastic.
Put a hole in the bottom of the pot for drainage? Depending on what it's made of you might need special bits.
Use skeeter tabs- they sell them for bird baths.
Find or make a tilt rack for the pot to make tipping easier.
