How do I waterproof the plug on my fountain??

Posted by moogies z8, D/FW Texas (My Page) on

I am installing a very small fountain with a 120V pump. I'd like to run a heavy duty, outdoor grade,50' extension cord along the edge of our wrap-around porch to the plug of the fountain. The extension cord will plug into a GFCI outlet on the 12' deep porch with a waterproof cover. (this outlet never gets wet)

My question is - how do I make the fountain cord plug/extension cord outlet waterproof? Is there any kind of staked housing that can be purchased to safely enclose this connection?

I've been googling and have come up with nothing like this - and it seems like it would be a pretty easy thing to do.

I appreciate any help that ya'll can give me!

Kathi,

My first instinct is that an extension cord is not a good idea. No matter how well it would be "waterproofed" there is still a possiblity of it getting wet at some point. Link below has a bit of discussion regarding such.

My solution to having a pond beyond an electrical connection and the cost of putting one in was going solar. It worked well and no concern about electrical. There are some downsides to solar, but still got my pond/waterfall/small creek.

I found a weatherproof housing for extension cords on the internet at Aquatic Eco-Systems. You do need to know the gauge of your cord to choose the proper size housing.

Nancy-
thanks - it's perfect! That's what I'll use.
