Fire Pit concerns

When our new patio was built, we included a fire pit which is a recessed area surrounded by rocks and lined with coarse gravel. The pit is just off the side of the patio and is surrounded by a perennial garden.

If we burn a fire directly in the pit, when it is not in use, it will have black ashes and partially burned logs which wouldn't be very attractive.

If we put one of those copper fire pits in the area, I'm concerned we would end up with the same black ashes always in view unless we find a pit with a lid.

If the lid is mesh, when it rains, where does the water go? Are there holes in the bottom of the pits to drain water?

If the lid is vinyl, it will be in view all the time - and I'm not crazy about the look of vinyl in a garden.

Any ideas or advice on how to have a fire pit in a garden that looks attractive when not in use???

Buy a copper lid for the pit as it sits there,I see them in the Frontgate catalogue. Now the water will seep into the ground. I do not quite see what is soo terrible about a fire pit looking like one would expect a fire pit to look, but I wonder if the smell of damp ash would bug me. I know my fire places/wood burning stove smell on humid days in the summer.

I have a stone fire pit connected to my patio. When we're done burning and I KNOW the fire is out I will remove the large unburned pieces and leave the smaller pieces and the ash.

When it rains only the largest pieces of what's left remain; everything else gets washed down through the earth below.

I don't bother to cover it.
