| Just posted this on another thread, but it is so unique that I thought it should have a separate thread.
Sedum roof for a shed and other ideas which create more ideas.
Am still working on small new shed and love this. Sedum roof? Sedum grows well in my area, but wonder how it would do on a large area roof. Other ideas abound with this one though. Even if it were planted on a small porch overhang.

Chicago has started a green roof program on several of its buildings. it has worked but I understand the engineering behind it is very intricate. Of concern is the weight of the growing medium.

Ianna, How interesting the concept is actually being used. Yes, the weight was my first thought. Plus, the link is from the UK and they have a lot of moisture, which is of short supply here in CO. Would require a drip system and then the issues of maaintaining roof if wood. Still, other possibilities and intriguing.

I've done a lot of reading on green roofs. Google that term and you'll be astounded. Major cities are doing big projects using this technology. Special soil mixes are being developed for optimal growth/minimal weight. AND the plantings definitely not limited to sedums. Interesting topic, huh? Rosie in Sugar Hill, GA

Rosie, Since I first posted I did a search on GW for Sedum roofs and there were a good dozen threads. All with instructions and different plantings as you mentioned. Plus negatives/positives. I wasn't aware of the extent this concept was being used. Yes, this topic is interesting and prompts me to look at what I am not aware of beyond "green roofs". Sandy

Emagineer, Computer down for several days. (Amazing what all I got accomplished on other projects. LOL) I followed your lead and did a gardenweb search for green roofs. Amazing information. Any of you with interest in this are in for some good reading. So, how are the plans coming for your shed?? Rosie in Sugar Hill, GA

Rosie, The shed needs half the roof finished (old wood shingles from reroofing house) and doors/windows put in. My son is adamant that I do not climb up there to finish it. He added two windows in the roof for additional light, in case I decide to plan a little greenhouse program. Am in limbo finishing all with his work schedule and high temps here are keeping us inside. I did build a small porch base last weekend. And my plan at this point is to build an arbor over the porch with tree branches/limbs/twigs. This may allow me an option to attempt the sedum idea on a small area at the top of the arbor. Tis a funky shed....one I can play with and try a number of ideas seen. Thanks for asking.
