Looking for Lion of San Marco

Posted by tomtuxman 6bNY (My Page) on

My garden contains a small graveyard for my deceased cats. I would like to place a statue of the Lion of Saint Mark next to it in a patch of pachysandra. The Lion of San Marco is a lion seated upright with an open book in front of him. The book says "PAX" (peace). I have been unable to find a source. Any suggestions?

Not seeing any seated lions. Here is a link to the winged lion, the symbol of St. Mark, and also the the icon of Venice (the city is under St. Mark's protection).
This is a toughie - Good luck!

I looked too and did not find what you are looking for. I did find models of the two lions who guard the NYC public library, in case your beloved kitties were readers!

Thanks, kdenise & socks!

No, my kitties were not readers (they could if they wanted to, but they were a bit lazy, preferring to have the "food wench" -- moi -- read to them).

The request (yes, it is a darn hard one, I have looked and looked) comes about partly because I went to architecture school in Venice and have a soft spot for that place, and plus my DH's middle name is Mark, so it all fits, in my mind.

I might have to spring for the bucks and get some one to sculpt. Thanks all the same.

you might try Toscano; designtoscano.com they have a lot things along those lines. Let me know if you find it. (I have kitties too)

Thanks, Fanatic, that was a great suggestion, they had a zillion different statues, but -- alas! -- no Lion of San Marco. They had a very nice Beaumarchais Castle lion that was similar but it had a shield in front of it instead of the book. I just gotta keep looking...

There's a cat clinic near our house that has a pair of San Marco lions located at their parking lot entrance. They look very similar to the ones from A. Silvestri catalog.

Thanks Mia, close but no cigar. Those are the same as the Beaumaris Castle lions from the Toscano catalog. They are holding shields in front of them, not the Good Book reading "Pax".
I've been looking for a real San marco lion for a long time and I have seen all kinds of lion figures. The Beaumaris Castle lions are the closest yet.
If I can't find a San Marco, I might end up getting the Beaumaris and inscribing Pax on the shield.
Thanks again!

Try Toscano again. (Though this appears to be an "indoors" version.)

Dear jkw7aj, thank you so much!

I don't know how I missed that on the Toscano link. That's exactly the statue, now to find out (a) if it's weather proof for outdoors and (b)if it comes in a slightly larger size.

Thank all of you who responded, this site is so fantastic for people who like to help others. XXXOOO

I love that lion! We'll be going to Venice next year, and I'll be watching for all the lions!

Just another thought: What about searching for a Venice statue to store that sells over the internet? Also, if the indoors version at Toscano is not weatherproof....can it be coated w/ polyuethane or something to make it so????

Gee, fanatic, a statuary store in Venice is a very good idea. I've had no success in finding one yet -- back to the search engines!
