Fossilized stepping stones.

Hope this is the right forum to show these in. My hubby and I were feeling creative and decided to try our hands at making fossil stepping stones. I think they turned out really neat. We built frames, laid leaves out in the bottom, and filled the forms with tinted concrete. The leaves are still decaying in some spots, but you get the idea. We need to mortar in between the cracks, but I was anxious to share them with someone! Hope you like!

Very nice! Like the variety... Did you reinforce them and how thick are they?

Flowrpowr, wonderful look! I really like the variety of leaves that you used. I know participants on the Hypertufa Forum would enjoy seeing these, too.

Very nice! I also like the variety of leaves and the subtle shades of tan and gray. What tint did you use?

I've been playing with making leaf imprints in hypertufa myself the last few days. I can't wait until they are cured more so I can take pictures and post them, too.

Very beautiful artwork there...you should be very proud...

They look great! Our local zoo has pathways made like this, but yours are much prettier.

I am posting the picture that went with this post again. I cleared out my FTP space, and accidentally deleted it. I had an e-mail request for the photo.

Gorgeous! Are you going to grout between the pavers? It would look neat if you put soil and let moss or some greenery grow between them! Grout the bricks to keep the walkway intact, but I'd let stuff grow between the pavers.

Sorry about the double picture there. When I added the new pic. the old one reappeared!
Pesky, that's a good idea about the moss. I am not sure if there is enough space between the cracks to plant moss or not. The reason we were thinking about using mortar, is I hate pulling weeds out of sidewalks! We thought if we mortared it, we would not have any maintenance. I am all for anything that does not require maintenance!

Unique and Lovely!

What a great idea and a neat way to add a personal touch to your homestead.

Thanks for sharing!

is it just straight concrete in the stones or did you use chicken wire or something else to reinforce them?

they are just beautiful!! i'm definately going to make some too!

Wow, I did the same thing! Mine look quite similar. I learned a few things. Sand mix works much better than regular old concrete. If you spay the leaves with WD40 they come off much easier. I used Buff colored concrete tint in some. For others I mixed a bit of acrylic paint in the sealant when I sealed them, giving them washes of color. Mine are about 3 inches thick and I have them sanded in to make a patio under my pergola. I wish I was clever enough to post pictures!!!!

These pavers are beautiful. Have to try them on my long to do list. Well done

Did you put the leaves in the bottom or on the top of the cement? They are beautiful and I hope I can get someone to help me make some!

RE: Fossilized stepping stones.

Sorry about the delay responding to the recent posts. I have been having a problem with my mail, and did not know people were still posting about the stones.
I did use reenforcement in them. Just chicken wire, and they are between 2"-3" thick. They were very heavy to move, so if I do them again, they will be smaller.
We built a wood frame, and screwed it down to a piece of plywood. Make sure they are level, or your stones will be uneven.
Lay your leaves in the bottom, with the bottoms facing up, layer about an inch of concrete, then chicken wire, then more concrete until you get them the thickness you want.
Let them cure, flip them out, peel off the leaves, and they are done.
We did add buff colorant to the cement mix.
Glad to see there is still some interest in this post. So far it it one of my favorite projects that we have done. I am just lucky to have a hubby who is willing to help me. Those bags of concrete are heeaaavvyy!

RE: Fossilized stepping stones.

This is a beautiful work of art in your garden.

 o
RE: Fossilized stepping stones.

Absolutely beautiful!!! I will put that on my list of things I want to do.

Tip for removing weeds from between paving stones - pour boiling water on them. Doesn't require much boiling water to do them in.

Those are sooooooo ubelieveably cool. I'm so glad you shared a pic with us! Sally.

I love them!!! Now I feel the need to make some! My sweetheart and his mother have talked about making them with leaves, but I thought they would be hard to see with the white of the cement, adding the color makes them look like...fossils! LOL!! GREAT PICTURE!! THANX!! :o)

 o
RE: Fossilized stepping stones.

Has anyone ever put leaf patterns on their existing cement patios? Guess I'll just use paint or stain and real leaves to "stamp" the image on the cement. What do you "paint" over the images with so they remain?

The pics of your stepping stones is inspirational- may even get me to working! Thanks

RE: Fossilized stepping stones.

Thanks so much for all of the positive feedback. It is starting to look even prettier now that it is aging. The veins of the leaves are filling up with debris, and it makes them pop out more.
If anyone tries this project, please make sure that your forms are level, and not warped. One of our forms was warped, and now that stone collects a small amount of water. Not a big deal, but if you are using them to make a pathway, it could get slippery if it freezes in the winter.
I would love to see pictures if anyone else tries to make them. It would be interesting to see what someone else can come up with. I liked the idea of the bricks to edge it, but I am sure there are other ways you could use them. They would make neat stepping stones in a garden.

RE: Fossilized stepping stones.

What a great idea! These are so beautiful. I am going to make them as soon as it stops raining here in Ohio. FlowrPower I sent you a separate email. Thanks for posting your project. Linda

RE: Fossilized stepping stones.

I love your pictures! I tried this yesterday, and when I plopped them out this morning, the edges of the leaves had floated up :( How did you keep them down? I made a small paver with a big maple leaf in it, and it looks awful. then I made a round stone with four leaves in it, and it did the same thing :( bah. I want mine to look like yours!!!

=)
