Do You Have A Cool Shed?

| I posted this on gardenjunk and got some wonderful responses so I thought I'd ask here too.
Does anyone have a cool shed to share? After taking so many shed photos this summer on local garden tours, I decided to start a Garden Shed Hall of Fame on my garden blog.
If you'd like your shed included, please just post the picture in this thread or post a link to the photo and I'll add it to the ones already on the blog page. Can be exterior and/or interior pics--whatever shows off your shed the way you love it.
The shed can be simple, elegant, eclectic or eccentric: I love them all.
If you have a blog or website, let me know and I'll link back to that too.

| Here's one from a magazine. I was charmed by it many years ago and kept it as inspiration, in case I ever live on a lot at the bottom of a hill.

| What a great thread! I have kept a few newspaper articles on unique garden sheds for hopes of using the ideas in the future. We have an above ground pool and I know someday we'll take it down. I'd love to replace it with an eclectic shed, full of personality. Melisssa, I bookmarked your website and can't wait to go through the contents! Looks like it will be a good source of relaxation and inspiration! Thanks for providing the links! |

| I love all of the sheds that I've seen here! My husband wants to build a simple garden shed but he's no carpenter. I've seen a really cute one that is made from old doors and windows for the top. Does anyone have a simple plan for a shed/greenhouse?? I found 10 large old 8 pane windows in my neighbor's trash this week!! |

| It certainly would! That is so special. Love all the little details like the hearts on the flower boxes and the candles in the windows. Good job! I think Melissa in Canada does the Hall of Fame, but she hasn't been around lately. Anyone heard from her? Luvs |

| Mike- That is one beautifully decorated shed! I can only dream to have a shed like that. This past summer DH and I bought one of the expensive 'plastic' sheds. Its really nice, but not for hanging things on. So I plan on making a wooden 'frame' around the corners at least, might be able to hang lights or something next year. That way I can nail lattice to the frame..and hang things that way. I so love your shed. Sherrie |

| Can you guys help me out on finding some pics? I want to make a shed completely from old doors and windows. It will probably end up being built like a puzzle depending upon size/shape of these items. Actually it won't have a front as I want it more for a sitting porch with potting bench, etc. The back will not be seen, so I'll probably just build frames to support the windows/doors. I also have a ton of old wood shingles for siding it. Searching does nothing but list "sheds" for sale...all the advertising. I've tried funky, windows, etc. but just can't find photos. Do any of you know of a shed that has been done this way and pics? |

| Denise-- I added your lovely shed (and garden) to the Garden Shed Hall of Fame. Thanks for showing it. emagineer--I have seen a few sheds done the way you describe and I cannot find the links. They were all on various blogs. If I find them, I will list the links here. ~~Melissa |

Melissa, Thanks for responding. I really am having a hard time finding some pics and makes me feel less stupid knowing they aren't that easy to find. If you do come across any, deep appreciation ahead of time. I love your site and have enjoyed spending time there. Also, I also have a shed which needs some input on finishing. Should I post a pic on this thread or do you think...start a new one? Sandy |
RE: Do You Have A Cool Shed?

| Decided to ask my questions here...knowing those posted are into sheds. My son built the shed late last summer. It is 10 X 12. He is the typical "guy", 6'2", and before I knew it the shed became beyond larger than planned (much larger than the photos appear). Then the doors, somehow he thought there would be something the size of a car driven into it. Then the "ramp", which I really dislike and has some value for heavy/large items. We are using quarter sawn barked logs for the siding. These logs are heavy, 2-4" thick. This shed is currently used for storage...until I convince myself to get rid of "stuff". I also plan on building a smaller shed to the far right of yard with french doors to open up and use for a sitting area, planting, etc. A guy shed is enough...need some girl stuff going on. My issues with this shed are the doors and ramp. Doors: I would like to make one look like a standard house size door to get away from the "commercial" feeling. I put a halt on finishing the front, siding was going to go across the doors too. I keep thinking the siding could be attached in a pattern on the doors to look like there is only one single/smaller door. Or, not use siding on one of the doors and create such using something else. Another idea was actually cutting a smaller door opening and adding a door...like barns have. Actually, adding the current siding to the doors is going to make them very heavy and am open to ideas for not using it on them. Ramp: Too heavy to move for optional uses. My plan was stairs or a porch landing across the front, which would have looked far better. But, the guy stuff got built before I had even thought about what he was doing. Right now my idea is to use the same siding for building a small fence on both sides from front of shed to end of ramp. Plantings to soften. Any and all suggestions for softening this shed is welcomed. I think it has been in view for so long, my creative process is holding out. Apology for the mess shown in pics, still finishing siding and as you can see...snow, which just isn't going away to get anything done.

| Karen, I really enjoyed the tour of your new house. Your dh is very talented, not to mention brave to get up that high on a ladder. I really like your shed, it's very cool. I like that window shed too. It would make a nice greenhouse. My shed is still half done. Maybe I can show it to you soon. |

I will post a picture of the shed and my home when it's done. A lot of hours and detail, I hope that you will enjoy |

| Okay, I'm curious as to what constitutes a "shed" for the Hall of Fame you are looking for. Is there a task involved or size, style? I really like the creative efforts of Marti, and that was a lot of work which really turned out well. But you completely skipped over her. It may not fit in my back yard, but still think it is a great shed transformation. Just asking, as all efforts and posting here are because we really feel attached to what we are doing. And I love sheds, even the ones that are no longer possible to restore. Not for getting into a Hall of Fame, or that one is better than another, but it seems like it has evolved into such. Or I'm in a mood this morning and ignore me or I apologize ahead of time and you can hit me with an argument. |
RE: Do You Have A Cool Shed?

Hi emagineer, Thanks for pointing it out--it's just an oversight on my part. I get the messages from this thread emailed to me (instead of checking the board) and in the message I got, just the first of Marti's pics showed up so I thought the 'after' would follow later and I had it on hold. I see now when I scroll up that both pics are actually in the message--and what a fantastic looking shed it is! I would be delighted to add it to the Garden Shed Hall of Fame. Apologies if I appeared to be leaving anyone out. As for my criteria, I simply love sheds and love to collect photos of them. Also (not in this case but with some links to photos of unknown origin), unless permission to use the photo is implicit in the posting, I like to check first by email to make sure I'm not using their photo without their permission. Sometimes I don't hear back so I keep it in the hold pile. I love it when there's a story to go with the photo, and I'm happy to link to the owner's related sites or photo albums as well. It's all for fun and love of sheds and gardens, so if anyone ever feels overlooked, please just send me a message with a nudge. My computer time is sporatic but I'm very appreciative of all the sheds shared so far (and the interesting people I've corresponded with along the way). I'll post Marti's pics soon. Thanks, Melissa My garden blog |

| Look what I found. Am still working on small new shed and love this idea. Sedum roof? Sedum grows well in my area, but wonder how it would do on a roof. Other ideas abound with this one though. Even if it were planted on a small porch overhang. |

| The sedum roofs seem to be gaining in popularity this year. I love how they look. I was thinking a great way to test them out would be to do one on a large birdhouse. PS: Jason's replica shed is posted on the Garden Shed Hall of Fame. It's an amazing mini version of his home. |

This has been one of the best threads I have read in a long time. It has been raining here for 2 days and I have spent most of the day reading. Some very nice sheds out there I must say. Here is my very cluttered and very used garden shed. It came with the property and I would assume stay here until time ends. |

| This is a neat forum. I especially like the sedum roof idea. Thought you'd like to see my Irish Potting Shed that has turned into more of a guest house. By the way, the lower walls are made of 5" ceder logs chinked in with morter mixed with sawdust and wood shavings. See the link below. Joe |

I have a shed. It's not cool yet but I've been thinking about it for awhile. It's a plain metal shed. I ran across this site while googling "painting a metal shed". I see so many nice ideas. I'm going to read them all again carefully and then conform the ideas to come up with my own. Thanks!!! I think I have one already. I'd like to paint it a rusty brown red and find an old wheel at an antique store and lean it against the shed. I'll put some flower boxes out front of it on each side of the door. Thanks again!!! |
RE: Do You Have A Cool Shed?

| I posted this on another thread, but meant to post it here: My "garden shed" is an old three-seat outhouse that came from my mother's farmhouse. Before she sold the house, she called and asked if I wanted it -- we KNEW the new owners would tear it down. My brother-in-law put it on a snowmobile trailer and I gave directions long-distance on where it was supposed to go in my garden. My husband put a new roof on it and we painted it to match the barns. It has THREE seats -- for two adults and a child to use the facility at the same time -- and it has a vent in the back. I store rakes and tomato cages in there and LOVE IT! Carol |
RE: Do You Have A Cool Shed?

| Carol, you have the most wanted shed in the world to me. My favorite place as a child was an old outhouse on the farm. For years I tried to get my husband to build one for a potting shed. Never happened, always got this vague look of "not in our yard". Congratulations. |
