Outdoor furniture cover recommendations

I just bought new patio furniture and want to protect it from the get-go. I've been searching for hours on the internet and find conflicting information about what's best for the furniture. If it's waterproof then it's not breathable. If it's breathable then vents have been added that let in dust. If it's waterproof it doesn't have a soft liner to protect the furniture (usually these are polyester with a vinyl lining). One brand, Koverroos, are made of Tyvek and variants and say that Lloyd/Flanders recommends so that sounds good.

Any recommendations from personal, time-tested experience?

We actually just use a regular old tarp. Not very attractive, but it's waterproof and seems to breathe as well. No mold when we uncover in the spring.

I used to work at an environmental company and Tyvek is NOT breatheable (try wearing it in 114 weather in Arizona, oy it's like taking a sweatbath).

If you are trying to protect it from water, stains, and uv fading, then I recommend using SunArmor UV and SunArmor WAter and stain, I know its sold at linens and things, but you can also buy it online at

or from the manufacturer

Denier Polyester covers are waterproofed using a revolutionary dioxin-free and eco-friendly coating. It's also important to get covers that provide "positive airflow" to prevent mold and mildew build up!
