instructions for creating fountain from pot

Posted by idabean (My Page) on

I need both visual and written instructions for creating a fountain from a pot I purchased. This is my first attempt at this.

There are a few preliminary questions I have.
(1)How can I determine if the pot is waterproofed, if it is clearly not ceramic? It is "mosaic" on the outside (with instructions not to soak the outside or leave out in snow or freezing weather) The inside appears to be constructed of cloth "screening" material, possibly covered with a lightweight plaster finish, heavily painted.

My observations lead me to think it is not truly waterproof.

(2) If it is going to work at all, it would be most attractive if the width were as wide as the pot itself....however, I think a black liner is unattractive in this bright pot. What kind of interior container can I use that goes with the bright blue/green of the original pot? Look around for plastic waste baskets?
Could shower curtain material work?
How is any kind of liner attached to the pot?

(#) all the electronics baffle me. I thought I understood but I don't.

I know I recently saw a magazine article about exactly this. Does anyone remember where?

Thanks for any help.

MARIE-Did you check out any of the suggestions I posted on your first post? If it isn't waterproof you could find something to fit inside.Anything plastic or glass or ceramic would work as long as it fits down inside. You will need a pump and instructions are usually on the package as to installation.Michaels,Hobby Lobby and sometimes even Wal-Mart have them for around $20.Only thing I know to tell you is do some research on the internet as to how to put it together.Sorry I can't be of more help.......Lillie

Thanks to Lillie

Hi Lillie,
our messages crossed. I think I've got it now. Thanks for all the effort!

marie, If the instructions that came with the pot say "not to soak the outside" how are you going to use this as a fountain. The outside WILL get wet. Even if this is a bubbler fountain, the water does and can splash on the outside. This sounds like a plaster container which will dissolve from water. Not a good choice for a fountain. Billie

It may well be plaster, Billie. As I was fumbling through the description of the material, I kept thinking about spackling an interior wall....mesh, plaster, etc. Earlier today, I was thinking about how it would even hold up in a week of rain, if it is not supposed to be soake.

I'm disappointed, but it is probably not a good investment of 85 dollars. The base is clearly ceramic, and there is a much smaller bowl in same design that is ceramic.

I'm imagining, however, that the glue and finish that holds the mosaic finish are not waterproof.

Thanks for the caution and advice. \

Can you think of a way to "waterproof" such a sealent?
