What kind of filter to use for my fountain pump?

I'm a water garden newby who needs ideas for a filter for my fountain. I have a 20-gallon half-barrel with a small fountain that is powered by a small pump. I am growing water lettuce in this and the roots are shedding particles that stick to my little pump. I tried covering the pump with old nylon pantyhose, but that just gets clogged too. To treat the water I'm using a benficial bacteria product called Tetra Pond Aqua-Zyme. Should I also be using the product that sediments particles to the bottom? Any ideas you might have would be welcome. I'm stumped. Molly

You might get more help if you post on "Ponds and Aquatic Plants."

I've wrapped pumps with pieces of the black plastic-y furnace filter material that is washable. I can't remember what it's called. Eventually it gets clogged too but it takes a while. Hope that helps.

I don't know how deep your pond is, but you can cut a piece of screen the size of your tub and cover it with nylon hose. Support it all around the tub, so that it doesn't touch the pump. Leave an inch or 2 between the pump and the screen. You will have a larger area, it will take longer for it to clog. You can also use a product that causes the particles to clump togeather. Regardless of what you do, you are going to have to clean that filter sometimes.

Try the "pond" site and look for Adam's filter. I think that might just be what you need. good luck
