Painting Granite

I have a headstone made out of granite that I need to paint the wording on it. The wording is engrave but doesn't show up so I want to paint the lettering black. The granite is not polished but ruff. I will also need advice on how to remove the paint I should make a mistake. Any suggestions? It really needs to last a long time.

I have no experience with granite but my first thought would be to put a good coat of wax on the smooth, un-engraved part so that the paint will be repelled should it touch it. Then, get an oil-based paint and brush it into the engraved area in thin coats. You may want to call a monument company in your area and see if they have any tips since they are the experts. My sympathies are with you if this headstone is for a loved one!

Use a small stubby brush to put Vasoline on the outer edges of letters (where you DON'T want paint to go)...then try Patio Paint for the letters. You can just wipe off the Vasoline after paint is dry. Good luck!
