New pergola and old tree parts

I have a pergola so new looking either it is an eyesore or everything else is. I have some great looking hollowed out tree stumps and old branches. Is there something I can soak or spray the old wood with to kill bugs or whatever so that I can wire it to the posts on my new pergola? I want the vines etc, to climb the old wood up into the new. Make sense?

Years ago I dragged the coolest looking tree stump home and painted our last name on it. We developed a terrible insect problem in the house and had to call an exterminator. He tapped on the stump outside the front door and about 7 gazillion black somethings scurried out. "There's your problem."

Maybe you could call an exterminator or your local Agway for a suggestion to pretreat your stumps before you anchor them to your pergola.

Using them for vine guides sounds like a great idea, can you post pictures when you're done?
