 o
window boxes and rotting wood question

Hi everyone,
I'm usually just a lurker over here, but I have a question that I think someone might be able to help me with. I recently had to take down some window boxes before hurricane Frances paid us a visit, and when we went to put the boxes back up, we noticed the wood on the window frame was beginning to rot because of the screw holes - we attached the window boxes directly to the wood of the window frame.

Here's a photo of the boxes:

Here's a close up photo of the offending window boxes:

Does anyone have any tips on how I could keep the screw holes from rotting the wood? Or maybe there's a better way to attach the window boxes to the house?

I appreciate any advise.

Thanks so much!
Nicki

Try e-mailing ASK THIS OLD HOUSE, perhaps they will have answer.

Beautiful home by the way!
