workbench plans

Came across this article on building an outdoor workbench.

http://www.hammerzone.com/archives/workshop/workbench/outdoor/3x7_long.htm

Suddenly I realized I wanted one and, with winter coming up,
I may have free time.

I have been thinking about whether I could use a heavy perforated metal table top mesh for the top, to let snow, water etc through like some wrought iron deck tables use. Wooden slats would make it more difficult to make. Anyone have any idea of where get such meshing without $$$?

For saving $ you might try large recycling outfits. Cargo containers on ships are not going back to China empty. It is amazing how much is being taken into recycling outfits as prices for all metals are going up.

What about recycling a metal shelving unit? I wonder if the size would be adequate - not so good if you have to piece together the top, but people throw them away all the time. Cool link, btw.
