Are there any traditional things that were are placed in gardens????
I'm fascinated by the traditons of various cultures for placing various sculptures etc. in gardens to protect? the garden and or improve the harvests also as a rememberance of say the dead or to welcome spirits like faeries....
I think these sculptures add interest to the garden as you could tell the story of why they were placed there and their history...... the legends of and lore of gardens are interesting to me .... they contribute to the magic of it all....
For example in ancient rome statues of priapus were often placed in gardens.... as he was the protector of gardens ... he oftened carried a sign that said something to that effect ...... Catholics sometimes put statues of mary but even more appropr (for the garden) are statues of st. francis sometimes errected and saint fiacre.... both saints of gardens..... saint francis also particularly of animals...... saint fiacre more particularly of gardens.....
Any other ideas??? I've heard there are traditional buddhist and eastern statues placed in gardens.... any ideas from any culture would be welcome.... still practiced or not..... :) |

| Well, the Japanese garden near our home has a bridge over water, a zen garden of raked gravel, and a large gong. |

| If you want to include plants, there is the Passion Vine (Passiflora varieties). The flower parts are supposed to symbolize elements of passion of the Lord: the lacy crown could be a halo or the crown of thorns; the 5 stamens the 5 wounds; the 10 petal-like parts the 10 faithful apostles. 'Pup |

Bottle trees "Originated as an ancient African custom that can be traced back as far as ninth century Congo. Natives hung hand-blown glass on trees to ward off evil. The tradition migrated to the United States and became part of the Southern African-American folklore." Madison County Herald usadeepsouth.com |

I love having sculptures in the garden also. We like creating our own. First try was my design Mouth of Truth. She came out pretty good for beginners. Then saw "The Mouth of Truth" in Rome...had to have one. Also created two statues from Salvador Dali painting. I say create your own and your own lore. It is your world to create. Have fun. You can see mine...link is on my page. We have loved creating and still creating ours. |
