 o
question about raising height of an arbor

I hope I'm in the right forum for this! I have a very tall fence with a gate going from my backyard into my side yard (which is all for storage and junk). Most of the time the gate is open, but when we have parties, etc., I close it. The fence is cedar painted white, and the top 18 inches or so is lattice.

I would like to put a wooden arbor at the gate opening, on which I will grow climbing roses. I actually found a perfect arbor, well priced, but it is 10 inches too short! It is also cedar, painted white, and is the flat-topped type of arbor (which would also match my pergola nearby). In my climate, wood will wear just fine, and I prefer it to vinyl, by the way.

I intend to attach the arbor to the frame of the gate, so it will not be free standing and will have plenty of support. How would I increase the height of this arbor without it looking like a patch job, and does anyone know of a website where I could buy a kit to do this? Or which offers arbor parts to be bought separately so I can customize the thing?

I'm planning to spend about $250 on the arbor. I don't mind paying a bit more for a good product, but I am not interested in a really expensive structure for this particular spot.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Debra

What are the dimensions of the arbor legs at the ground? If (for example) it was 4"x4" then you could add a section of 4x4 between it and the ground and paint it to match. It would be even less noticable if you had ivy growing up the legs.

I'd build a base that is just slightly larger than the original base; trimmed with a bit of fancy wood trim. Imagine a column base.

If you follow the link below and scroll toward the bottom of the page, you will see how I extended the posts on my wife's bench arbor. It worked out well but it will take some time to do.
