Open-Pollinated Orange Marigolds?
| | |
Posted by kr222 6b (My Page) on Sun, Jan 29, 12 at 12:05
Does anyone know of any open-pollinated marigold varieties? I think Crackerjack is one, but I was wondering if there are any all orange ones. Especially ones that aren't extremely tall. I really want to start saving seeds year to year so I don't have to keep purchasing seed packs every year.
Thanks!

| Kim, Most marigold varieties are open pollinated. The F1 hybrids aren't always identified as such, but a dead giveaway is the price of their seeds. The very expensive marigold varieties are very likely F1 hybrids. A company like Hazzard's offers a very wide selection of marigolds. Scroll down that listing to find the varieties that interest you. Obviously, lots of seed companies offer a selection of marigolds, and some companies specifically identify the F1 hybrids. ZM (not associated with any product or vendor mentioned or linked) |

| French Marigolds aren't very tall and are open pollinated. I bought a mix several years ago and haven't had to buy them since.

| I planted the French Marigolds called Janie a few years ago and loved them. I did save seeds. I was planning on planting those seeds for this upcoming season but saw online that they were listed as a hybrid. Then I was looking up other varieties that I liked, and they were also listed as hybrids. That's why I was looking for open-pollinated varieties. I was going to experiment and plant some just to see what happens, but I want to plant a large patch right in my front yard. I don't want to get an unpleasant surprise. |

I found my original pack of seeds. American Seed(not American Seed Company)French Marigold Double Mix from 2005, probably purchased at the dollar store. There's no mention of them being hybrid on the pack. I've just been saving seed from the ones I like the best and they come pretty true, although there are slight variations like more gold on some, or more dark orange/red on others. Most of them look like the ones in the photo. The company doesn't sell directly to the public, but just sells the seed racks to stores. Check dollar stores in your area so you don't invest a lot to try them. They're cheap, they're lovely planted en masse, and I even like the way they smell(but maybe I'm weird). HTH

| One of my favorite marigolds is Tiger Eye. Although not all orange, they are beautiful, 12" tall, open pollinated, and an heirloom to boot! |
