Seed starting?

Good Day!
Is there any place I can find a timeline for starting seeds? I know some varieties take longer to mature so they need to be started earlier. So I am wanting to know how early to start various seeds. For example, I've learned the hard way not to start marigolds & zinnias in early March. Is there a website that gives seed starting data? Thanx, Barbara

such a list.. would have to be highly specific to your zone ... your location.. and your micro climate ....

so i highly doubt... you will find the prefect list ...

as you found out.. and so did i ... having spring fever.. in the middle of winter.. in z5 ... tends to make you start plants waaayyyy to early ... lol ...

my best suggestions... to to tend towards later ... as you can always fatten them up late... as compared to them bolting indoors ...

take your last expected frost date .... count back germination time .... and then add what.. about 30 -45 days to bring them up to some decent size ...

with my late may frost free date ... plus about 2 weeks to germ ... that would be bringing me to thinking about doing it in mid march ... or so ... yeah.. i know... thats fuzzy math ... lol ...

the biggest problem with that.. is that by 4/1 ... the weather is breaking.. and i dont want to be spending a lot of time indoors playing with seedlings ....

good luck

RE: Seed starting?

Thanx, Ken -
I used to have a list but can't find it. It didn't give dates but number of weeks to start before the last frost. I didn't think about it but I could Google for it. But I thot someone here would have already found their ideal list. I probably also should have asked this at the Seed Starting forum. I haven't been on GardenWeb for a very long time and forgot about that site. Barbara

RE: Seed starting?

Hi Barbara,

This is one online Seed Starting Schedule. If I come across another, to use as a "second opinion", I will post a link to it here.

RE: Seed starting?

Hi Barbara,

Here is that "second opinion" online Seed Starting Schedule from Burpee. To use that Growing Calendar, first you enter your Zip Code, and then you choose a Category from Vegetables, Flowers, Perennials, Herbs, and Fruit Plants. That generates your "personalized" Growing Calendar.

Enjoy,

ZM
