Wow!
Great color, variety, and very healthy plants and blooms.
Do you sell bouquets? You certainly have a wonderful garden.

It is still cold here and my garden is still asleep under the snow. Thanks for the jolt of color!

Izhar, I always enjoy looking at your flower beds. Tell me, what is the white substance that surrounds each bed?

 o
RE: Some Annuals (Pics)

Thank you both of you :)... its been a long time since I posted here..

@ franeli: they are just part of my garden, no intent to sell them.. weather is warm here now, spring is on its last stage today is around 86F

@ rhizo_1: the white lining is just a byproduct of marble cutting and polishing... my father used it just to line the beds, giving them an outline or border, but it is keeping the ants at bay... so it is beneficial...

WOW! What are your secrets? Please share! :)

RE: Some Annuals (Pics)

I follow simple and general steps:

1) Mix the top 5 inches of soil with well rotted manure or any compost

2) Plant the seedlings or sprinkle seeds

3) Water them daily in morning

4) When the seedlings are around 3-4 inches, I give them NPK 17:17:17 granules lightly (say a handful per 4 meter square) fortnightly

5) Deadhead them every week, this thing makes the difference and make my garden bloom much longer and plants healthy

6) I rarely spray any pesticide as I love the butterflies and bees around my plant, have a wild hive in my home..

7) Most of the flowers you see are from the saved seeds, by the end of season I stop deadheading them and start collecting seeds

LadyBirdSquirrel,

Sakata in Japan produce the Falcon strain. I don't know anything about the company, but Penya Seeds list some of the Falcons.

Hi izhar,
I like studying fertilizer and I am curious about the actual amount you use. So this is a serious question.
Could you please measure how much fertilizer is in a "handful" for you. Any measurement is good. I can convert to "amount per square foot". I have many different types of fertilizer and can convert for each based on the ppm you get from the 17-17-17. What is a fortnightly? Is that every 2 weeks?
Your soil is probably different so I have to consider that too.
Thanks,
Bob

RE: Some Annuals (Pics)

Hi Bob,

my handful is roughly 3/4th of a 250 ml cup.. hope this helps..
For your interest, i would like to tell you that i have switched to a different NPK 8:23:18... this is because i use manure initially which has plenty of nitrogen releasing on long term basis.. my plants responded well to the new fertilizer, with more blooms compared to foliage.. fortnightly, yes every 2 weeks..

Soil here is alkaline (pH 7.5-8.. some areas above 9..!!) and sodic i.e. lots of salts in it (mostly sodium chloride).. for alkilinity i have started using Ferrous sulfate and elemental sulfur... Ferrous sulfate works very quickly in curing cholorosis of leaves, i use 1 table spoon dissolved in a gallon and water the plants monthly with this solution...

Thanks izhar,
I appreciate the information. I will study your method and compare it to what I plan do. On an experimental group of plants this year I will test 4 methods.
I had a method I used last year that produced great results but it was so time consuming.
I want to charge the soil perfectly with the right type of fertilizer so that the fertilizer releases slowly and I have the top address less. Also will try some methods to slow down the nitrogen and potassium leaching.
You are to be commended for producing such great plants in such an alkaline soil. You certainly know what you are doing.
Thanks again,
Bob

Thank you for your post Izhar. It has given me some ideas for things to plant here in Brazil. By the way you do have a USDA climate zone - everywhere in the world does. It is the same as ours - 11. - Ian.

RE: Some Annuals (Pics)

Hi Ian, yes i have a similar whether like USDA 11a..
