Any special instructions for planting Rununculus?

Posted by HighlanderNorth North DE (My Page) on

I bought several Rununculus plants today, and I think they were called Bloomingdales.

Anyway, a lady there at the garden center said the are a bit tricky to plant and grow, and dont survive as well as more common annuals. But she didnt elaborate, other than saying not to plant them too deep.

Are there any other 'special' instructions or things to worry about? Can the tubers, corms or whatever they are be dug up at years end and stored with dahlia tubers to be planted next year? The lady insinuated that wouldnt work.......

I am totally ignorant of your growing conditions, but can give you my experiences with Ranunculus. I have never started with a plant, only a bulb, using the term loosely. They are not planted deep, the top only about an inch under the soil level. Good rich well drained soil. Don't plant too early as they won't grow until the soil warms a little, right now for this location. They do well in a partial to full sun depending on location. After the plant dies down you can save the bulb and in fact you will find two or three bulbs where there was one. These can be separated carefully and you can multiply your stock for next year. Al

Not the easiest things to grow, but sure are beautiful. Here is complete cultural data, right from the breeding company. These were GORGEOUS in California last week.....

Here is a link that might be useful: Bloomingdale
