What is the difference between a:

Cypress Vine
Cardinal Vine
Rose Feather Morning Glory

I see people using these 3 names interchangeably. Are they the same plant?

RE: MG experts please! :) - I aspire therefore I am , replying...

Cypress vine is the common name for Ipomoea quamoclit.

Cardinal Vine is the common name for Ipomoea sloteri a fertile seed producing tertraploid though commonly misdescribed as Ipomoea multifida which is a sterile diploid.

Feathered has been used as a marketing name for I.quamoclit when the petals are distinctly separated and as a descriptor for Ipomnoea purpurea when the petals are separated and usually with many fringegy-like petaloid pieces which the Japanese refer to as a hige = bearded.

I usually only scan the vines section for Morning Glory related posts , but I received a private message from Brit asking me to take a look at the post here , but if anyone has Morning Glory related questions the Vines forum is the place to post, if you would like a reply from me , unless you are interested to join a devoted MG related group.

Glad to help out if I can....

TTY,...

Ron

P.S. - I never refer to myself as an expert but a 'constantly aspiring aficionado'...as I prefer to err on the side of cautionary disclaimer...

I have grown cardinal vine and morning glory vine.. . don't know the particulars but I do know the seeds were totally different on the 2 as were the foliage and flower. . . the cardinal didn't bloom much but my oh my did it ever produce some serious décor for the fence. . . the morning glories bloomed profusely as well as a ton of vine. . . don't know about cypress vine. . .
