| I guess the extraordinarily mild winter in NYC had a lot to do with it, but I was astonished to see mini snap buds about to open today. I had thought that the leaves were also dianthus, which comes back every year for me. But no!
Needless to say, I am delighted to have my mini snaps back so early AND to save about $6 or more not having to buy new ones this year! I also saved and rooted clippings from 2 of my favorite geraniums from last summer, so that will be at least $10 saved from not having to buy new ones as well. |

| This is the SECOND year in a row my snaps have come back. I've almost never in 40 plus years of gardening had snaps come back at all in Michigan, let alone 2 years in a row. And, actually, the winter of 2010-2011 was a harsher one than we had had for a while, but every time it was cold, we also had quite deep snow cover which insulated. And, of course, this past winter was the non-winter winter, and we only had one or two nights where temps fell below 10 degrees, basically it was a Zone 7b or Zone 8a winter. So yes, I have a number of clumps of hale and hardy looking snaps coming back. |

| Not wierd or strange at all. Snaps are pretty cold tolerant and I have had them winter over in my zone 3 climate. The seeds too are cold tolerant and need to freeze to germinate well. The only thing is that they take a long time to come up and grow. They might like it cool to germinate but they like it a bit warmer to grow so they often sit there and grow slowly waiting for the soil to warm a bit. You may have noticed them more this year because of the warm weather we had. I'll bet you've pulled some volunteers thinking they were weeds. The seed germinates with 2 leaves that have a slight point on the end. Take a good look at your seedlings and watch for them another year. |
