The view out of your windows

Not that there's anything wrong with the goal of "curb appeal," for which I also strive, but the views out of the windows are the most important thing to me, my primary goal when decorating with annuals. Most of the plants I use are really perennials, but they're sold/used as annuals, so I figured this was probably the most likely forum for this chat.

The two windows from which I "need" a good view are next to the computer, which is dominated by a huge pecan tree...

RE: The view out of your windows

From the kitchen sink, I see this spot, which keeps getting bigger every year. There's (not all visible yet) several roses, butterfly bush, Lantana, Hydrangeas in the shade to the right, Persian shield, and various other smaller perennials, working on making a solid edge of Lycoris radiata bulbs, some house plants I put out too early (so got frost bite,) and a lot of seeds sprouting. I'm going to hang pots around the top rail of the fence. When the perennials are all accounted for, the seeds sprouted, I'll see what "holes" are there and fill with, something...

Let's see your views, your spots where you need a view, tell us about your fantasy view, whatever comments "the view out of your windows" inspires. I learned a long time ago it sucks to have to go outside every time you want to see your own flowers...

My dishwashing view last summer. Geranium, dahlia, marigold, light violet old-fashioned heirloom petunia and another heirloom petunia that isn't blooming because I think I cut it back. The great thing about annuals is that you can be as gaudy as you like, with everything blooming at once. I lack the refined taste of those who are into foliage. I want to be cheered with color!

This was taken in 2012; we usually have the blue heron visit as well as the mallard ducks every spring. This was taken from my sliding glass door in my family room.

Edited because the first picture I posted didn't have any annual flower in it. :)

Lelia, so you're the dishwasher at your house, too? What a lovely planter. What are the purple flowers? I'd love to find some Geraniums that color.

Wow that's a beautiful bird! How cool! I have 2 metal ones, nowhere near as fun, they constantly fall over.

"Edited because the first picture I posted didn't have any annual flower in it. :)" That's OK, that would mean it's a pic of a spot that NEEDS some annuals! Perfectly relevant.

Hi purpleinopp,

That's not actually a single planter, it's a cluster of flowers in pots on a table on the deck. I never used to use the table, it was just taking up room, so I put some potted plants on it, and stuck it outside the window, and... what a view! You are so right about the importance of views. After all, people pay a fortune to find mountain or water views. I like floral views just as much and they are much cheaper!

The purple flowered plant is an heirloom petunia.

This was a shocking view out a window one February day. My current fantasy is to see a 60 degree day sometime soon.

Ken, "Let's see your views, your spots where you need a view, tell us about your fantasy view, whatever comments "the view out of your windows" inspires. "

Absolutely! Would love to see some of your pics, I know your yard is awesome. If your view is all about evergreens and Hostas, that's fine with me!

RE: The view out of your windows

This is the view out my back window, its a big 6x8 ft window. I think Aug or Sept from the year before last - its looking less chaotic now. The only things showing that might be considered annuals are the dahlias, and I must have cut most of the flowers right before I took this shot.

Flora and Campanula - I love small English back gardens.

My family spent a year in Richmond when I was 10 years old. I have such fond memories of that walled in back garden. There was a lovely old tree to climb, and it was so full of growing things. Most American back yards are 90% lawn with plantings at the perimeter.

I so wish I could wall in my entire back, but it would cost a fortune, or be a life's work if I tried it myself.

Purp - in my photo thats not watermelon, its some sort of volunteer gourd, probably from bird seed, but everything was looking so "messy" that year, I decided to let it grow.

Here's the view out my kitchen window, taken from outside the house, of course! To the right is a bottle brush that just came into bloom, and the pink rose to the left is Old Blush.

Hi Elizabeth,Your garden has a country look .I like it. How is the Sunsatia Mango Nemesia doing? I've looked all over& found many flavors of Nemesia but no mango & no fragrance.
I keep glancing out my window fully expecting to see snow flurries.Yesterday & day before it was around 85.

This is the view out my window this morning May 2nd.

Even in WI this is outrageous!!!

We had one week of spring like weather, daffodils coming up and crocus blooming - now this.

 o
RE: The view out of your windows

Good grief, Mandolls - I am definitely going to have to stop complaining about the cold Spring we're having. It's tropical here by comparison.

 o
RE: The view out of your windows

I was thinking about Mandolls & his large petunias. We lucked out. No freezing temps & no snow. Just rain & more rain.My petunias are blooming in the cold frame & another makeshift cold frame.I started some zinnias & morning glories & had to put them under my lights since it is so dark out.

Well... hopefully y'all up north have had a bit of thawing? What's the view look like now?

 o
RE: The view out of your windows

I can see this out the front, was just grass until a few months ago there. Dug out the corners next to front steps to do Cannas & Gladiolus.

 o
RE: The view out of your windows

I can see this from above, if I look out the window above it.

 o
RE: The view out of your windows

Part of this basket is visible from kitchen window.

RE: The view out of your windows

Deck and yard out back doors. Planters are love-lies-bleeding, impatiens, white marigolds. Notice bird feeding time!

Side window, impatiens and caladium.

RE: The view out of your windows

That's definitely a totally different look in your yard now, Tsuja, nice! Is that Borage in the middle?

This view has grown up a lot since April.

 o
RE: The view out of your windows

Thanks. The big blue in the middle is Eryngium planum ‘Blaukappe’.

RE: The view out of your windows

Ooh, I can make it out now that you tell me what it is. That's a much more interesting plant, (going by majority rule on google images of closeups,) and fanciness-of-name, though no doubt infinitely harder to find. Does it bite? Those always look so prickly. Do butterflies find nectar in those flowers? Looks like it's trying to plan an escape from its' cute little prison.

Really glad I jazzed up the window views, especially the new stuff this spring. With so much rain, it's impossible to go out any time of day or night and not get bites immediately and constantly, so to heck with doing anything more that I have to go outside to see (and get MORE bites.)

Love every pic so far, hope to see a lot more! All of these great views, I'm spending ALL of my efforts on window-views next year, and any 'holes' in the front yard.

 o
RE: The view out of your windows

It bites, it is trying to escape and it attracts every size, shape, and type of pollinator you can imagine. On top of that, the flowers have the smell of, well, sweat socks...after running a marathon...in Death Valley. But I still wouldn't be without it if only for the pollinators it attracts.

A closer view back in early July...
