Got Blue?

Look at the deep blue in this Japanese morning glory I have growing in a small container at the office. It's sad the flowers only last a day. They live on here in GW. :-)

I hope it is a seed maker.

The blue and white flower colors and the yellow-green leaves are a nice combination.

If it's indoors at your office, you might have to help it be pollinated (assuming it can be from its own flowers).

Otherwise, that's definitely a great beauty!

Thanks!

This species has shown to be self-compatible. I'll know soon if I see the seed capsules form. I have grown quite a few MGs indoors and have gotten viable seeds from them. Some varieties of Ipomoea nil just are not very good seed makers, such as some of the speckled flower types.

A deep blue like that is hard to find - Nice!

How large a container do you grow your indoor Ipomoea in? Do you prune them back regularly, or just let them wander?

Thanks, mandolls and mxk3.

Mandolls, this particular plant I have pruned to make a compact plant. Others I let wind around a circular trellis. Pot size ranges from a margarine tub size (as can be seen in one the photos above) to 6 to 8 inch diameter pots.

Thanks Gerris - Its not always easy to figure out the scale in photos.

Another question - the plants that you grow indoors - what is their life span? I know some "annuals" are actually very tender perennials, and can keep going year to year indoors. But I haven't heard that about M.G.

Do you usually just put them outdoors in the spring/summer and let them go when frost hits, then collect seed and start again? Or can you keep them alive and blooming for multiple years?

mandolls, most of the ones I've shown in this forum are species Ipomoea nil or I. purpurea. Both are annuals, and they'll eventually die over the course of a year.

The plants I grow outdoors I start indoors a couple weeks before I want to plant them out. I need to do work on the deck so I won't be able to plant until the first week in June. The Ipomoea nil flowers appear in great numbers in late July through September. Seeds are produced if I am lucky (not all Ipomoea nil are good seed makers) and I collect them for the future.

Thank you, bouquet_kansas!

The plant has made tertiary vines and is continuing its flowering, much to my delight.
