I am planting Mammoth Grey Stripe Sunflowers. Can you branch these to get two or more seed heads from the same plant? Has anyone tried this? I am not sure if it is a good idea or not.

are you only planting one??? if not.. then do one or two.. and leave the rest.. and see what happens ... my guess.. when you use the term GIANT ... is that a given root mass can support one GIANT .. and when you start making multiple flowers.. they are going to correspondingly reduce in size ... there is only so much.. a given root mass can do ... logical??? ken

Thanks Ken, I was thinking along those same lines. I am growing some others for height and flower size. However, I could plant a few off to the side and try branching them to get smaller but more flowers. With any luck, more seed for me (and the squirrels) to eat. I wonder about the weight of the flowers though. I imagine branching closer to the ground would be more stable. Perhaps I should try for a single tall stalk with multiple flowers on top. Any thoughts? -Tim

Hi Tim, There are several different varieties of sunflowers. For example, SunFlower Selections lists 22 branching stem varieties and 9 single stem varieties. ZM

Thanks for the link zenman. I am going to stick with the open pollinated Mammoth Grey Stripe for now. But I see they offer a branching hybrid giant that gets to be 17 foot.
