I have 3 large sandstones that I found in the woods this Spring. My DH cleared an area where our lawn joins the woods to put the stones. It is approximately 15 x 15. So I am starting a spur of the moment flower bed. I am planning to start cleomes, zinnias and cosmos from seed in the back. I am going to move some day lilies from other beds in there also. But I need some suggestions for shorter annuals that grow fast. I am planning to buy plants for these. The bed will get full sun until late afternoon.

Portulaca (moss rose) are shorter, and grow fast. The "Happy Trails" portulacas have a trailing spreading plant habit that can be useful. The dwarf zinnia Thumbelina are a very short zinnia. Thumbelina starts blooming at about 3 inches high, and the plant ultimately bushes to about 6 inches. Zinnita is a F1 hybrid zinnia that is similar. ZM

Thanks ZM! I bought some Zinnia "Cherry Profusion" that are short and bushy plants. I also bought verbena and dwarf coreopsis today. Hope these fill out this bed fast!

If your plants don't fill up your bed plant a few marigold seeds. They are fast coming up and only take about a month to flower
