Does anyone have any special tricks in keeping away chipmunks and squirrels until sunflower seeds germinate (direct sowing) ? Tried unsuccessfully last year four times. My only thought this year was to try a cut off milk jug to protect the seed. If I do get some to germinate, are they not as desirable to them? Isn't it just the seed and not so much the seedlings too? Thanks for input. Rachel

I mixed up this concoction to keep the bunnies away from my planted seedlings, so far it's working. Don't know if it will work for chipmunks, but it's worth a try!! Mix 3 chopped cloves of garlic, 1T of pepper flakes, 1T dish detergent & 32 oz of water. Put in squirt bottle and place in direct sun for 2 days. Looks brownish, stinks like heck, spray every other day on ground around planted seeds and/or directly on seedlings. Please let me know how it works out for you! Happy Gardening!

Rachel, I've used cayenne pepper powder for a long time to keep squirrels and chipmunks out of my seed beds and containerized plantings. Just sprinkle on top of the soil. Works great mixed into bird seed before filling the bird feeders, too. I buy big cannisters of the spice at Costco.

Thank you both very much! Looks like I'll have to wait another day or two to try your ideas as its cold and wet outside today. Thanks again!
