deer ate my million bells

I did not think the deer liked million bells, I put million bell hanging baskets all around. Today I went out and one basket is half gone, with hoof prints all around. I have 8 baskets total.

I'd be so mad!! Oh, you only lost one. That's not bad. I've been blessed where I am as I have virtually no critters that eat anything and I'm definitely in the sticks. I see them on occasion but they stay clear. No idea why.

I'm so sorry about your basket. Even one lost is frustrating, and they might come back for a second course! This is my first year in a house in the woods. I've seen deer all around the house, and they've munched on several clumps of what look like a type of hosta. I'm planning on planting out my wintersown zinnias this weekend, and I'll be very sad if they get eaten. I'm trying to re-establish a butterfly garden, and zinnias are a favorite of many nectar-seeking beneficial insects. I guess if they get chewed on, I'll have to think up some sort of protection that will let the bugs in but not the mammals. Wish me luck.

That is sad. Usually if they start eating they will come back. I would move them at least for a few weeks. They do come back once they find something they like.

I thought nothing would eat daffodils but my deer or rabbit at every last one of them this year. I have a bad deer problem. I get herds of them. I use everything know to mankind to try to garden. I have a couple of acres of land and they love what I plant.

I don't think we should be surprised at anything the deer begin to eat in locations where the pressure is high and natural environment is scarce.

I used to work with most of the garden centers and nurseries where I used to live in SC, helping them keep a (so-called) "Deer Resistant Plant List" for their customers. It was compiled from reports from those experience and from observations from the field. Boy, did that list start to dwindle as the years went by.

I moved the basket as soon as I saw that half of it was gone. I try to only plant flowers and shrubs deer do not like, but I guess if they are hungry they will eat anything. I bought 2 plants at the nursery that claim deer are turned off by. One is Rosalita cleome. It has a skunky type of odor, not powerful, but noticeable. I also purchased a plant called iboza. The local nursery says deer do not like to be in the area of this plant. It has no distinguisable odor, at least not to me. I will see if these work.
