Last year I saw how easy it was to take a small craft paint brush and dip it into a petunia to gather pollen and then carry it to another petunia to cross pollinate. Some are stingy with their pollen, some not. I got some very colorful results. This year a kind seed trader passed along "Rain Master" which is white, grows and sets seeds rapidly and reproduces true. Now I can't keep from grabbing the little paint brush when I go out and make some crosses. Actually I am swirling the brush in many of my petunias to help them along since I don't get bees to do the job. I am realistic and don't expect to get the colors I aim for but the mystery of what I will get is the fun part. Like I got several beautiful reds this year and did not have one red when pollinating last year. Bob

That sounds like fun, Bob. I have 2 different petunias that volunteer in my beds every year, one is a little VIP petunia, and it adds a lot of color, same every year. I got a pinwheel petunia last year, and this year the seedlings are all a hot pink, no pinwheels.

Sounds like fun! I want to cross-pollinate this year.

Thanks eahamel and Ladyrose. Time to rethink things. I have been busy cross pollinating Rain Master petunias with some other nice petunias. Problem is I got my first seed pod from RainMaster (one it self pollinated). There must be 100-200 seeds in that pod. I couldn't even handle the plants from one pod if I got reasonable germination. And I see many, many pods ripening. Now I am being very choosy and focusing on three new pods total with very specific crosses. Don't know what to do with the rest. Guess it's like a desert obsession, got to know when to quit eating. :-)
