I ordered Mirabilis Longiflora to grow this year, from Baker Creek. In the past I have grown M. Jalapa. I didn't notice there was a difference in the name until I looked the other day, as I was trying to figure out the growth habit. My jalapas have always been bushy but longiflora seems to be more of a long single stem. Will it bush out or do I have to pinch it? I gave some to my parents, saying they NEED to grow this by their patio to enjoy the evening scent and that it would be a nice bushy thing in their pot. So far it's a single main stem. They keep asking me if it's going to get bushy. I am at a loss. Anyone?

In my understanding that this plant does not really get going full steam until its second year. It is a perennial, though in your location will certainly die in the winter. It will bloom the first year, however. It's described as being sort of scraggly. ;-( Judging from all of the pictures I saw, it doesn't appear to be the most gorgeous plant around. Please know that I have not grown this plant myself...I just tried to do a little looking around for you.

Thanks Rhizo! Maybe I will look for the more traditional plant for my parents, as they want a nice bushy container specimen.
