Nicos are back!

Along with another poster's million bells, I see my Nicotiana is coming back after this mild winter, some of them blooming already. Nice bonus. Maybe it will make up for the buggy summer everyone is predicting!

Nickys are pretty hardy and sprout readily from dropped seed. It takes a few of hard frosts to kill the plant. Because they are semi hardy and because it is a perennial it would winter over if the climate was right.

Even after a hard winter I have had the seed sprout in my zone 3 climate. The thing is they take quite a while to grow into a viable plant. With the warm weather and Nicky's liking to sprout in cooler weather you may have a few little ones too if you look.

I don't know about a buggy summer. Maybe in your neck of the woods it may be but I have found the amount of rainfall in spring has a bearing on how buggy it is in summer. We have'nt had that much rain so I don't expect that many bugs. Then maybe that isn't true where you live.

Enjoy your nickos. I know they are one of my favorite annuals--well annuals in my climate.

I just bought some of those. They look full grown and 33 cents a piece! Will they spread out a bit? Also wondering if there are any special tips to dead heading. Thanks

gamountains--

When deadheading get the little ball behind the tube of the flower. They do bush out a bit, but not too much, especially after you have deadheaded the top flowers. If they are in full sun they will wilt in the heat of the day. They prefer to be shaded during the hottest part of the day.
Yours look like the dwarf variety and fully grown. They won't get much taller.
I like them with dwarf annual phlox and petunias. They all have those lovely colors and prefer the same part shade.
enjoy
