Can't I start Nasturiums now?

Posted by lovetogarden z4 NY (My Page) on

I have one area of my garden that is bare. It's on the top of a depression where I had a tree cut down. I think trailing nasturiums would look great there hanging over the stump. Is it too late to plant the seeds now. I'm in the Glens Falls area. Otherwise, I have a big pink wave petunia hanging basket where I could root a few cuttings now in water and plant them there and do the nasturtiums next year. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

I just planted mine. They are one of the few things I direct seed. They grow pretty fast. It may be a month before they are starting to look really good, but it will take even longer for petunia cuttings to really take off.

Do it.

Thanks Mandolis. I just put some in water to soak and will plant them tomorrow. One question - do the seeds need light or dark to germinate? Do I have to totally cover the seeds with soil? Thanks for any info.

Yes soak them and totally cover them with soil. plant them as deep as the seed is wide. Keep the soil moist so they can burst through the outer coating

My Nasturtiums, soaked and planted from seed are just peeking through the soil now. If you plant now in a month they will be blooming
