Please advise on yellowed leave/stems on transplanted annual salvias and plumosa celosia in Maryland garden of full sun and amended clay soil. Transplanted from nursery packs about a month ago to this zone 7 garden at church. Weather has been unusually rainy, but most days also have had hours of sun. Minimal growth, sickly overall yellowed plants. I think the apearance is called chlorotic? Plz help, no $ to replace them. --Carol

Hope it all works out for you.

"unusually rainy". Does your amended clay soil hold a lot of water? How deep is the amended part? Does the water pass through the amended part and hit the clay and stay in the root zone?

And how is it amended? Sand? Peat?

Agree. Salvias and Celosias tend to be highly drought tolerant. Plants like that often resent wet feet.

You might be able to save them by lifting them and potting them up until the weather dries out, then rework the holes and set the plants "high in the holes" to assure better drainage. Whatever you do, don't fertilize them. That might be the end of them altogether.

Even though you have had some sunshine it was probably not enough to dry out the soil enough. If you have no money to replace them I suggest you get some marigold and zinnia seeds and plant them around the plants already there. In a month they will be up and blooming. Then you can pull any of the plants that don't make it and still have a flower garden
