Mixing Annuals

Hi, I am a newbie so I could really use some advice. I plan on planting some impatiens, begonias, a few other varieties of shade annuals. The design I plan on going with is on the bottom. Should I mix them as follows..begonia, impatien, begonia, impatien etc. Or do I go with a row of each. Which looks better? Thanks in advance.

There aren't any plant police, so the choice is yours, but it is generally considered planting them in drifts or groups is most pleasing to the eye, because it looks more natural and less orchestrated. That is, unless you hope to have a highly formal bed where regimentation is desirable.

Sort of like this.

B-B-B-I-I-B-B-B-B
I-B-B-I-I-I-B-I-I

Keep in mind to put taller annuals to the back, and graduate height to shortest in front.

it tend toward groups of 3 of one type in a triangle .... in a scheme that lends itself to the color of each ... some colors just arent that great right next to each other .. and that is probably specific to your eye ....

and then.. after X number of each.. repeat the scheme ...

sorry.. but no diagram for that ... lol ...

the beauty of annuals is ... if you really mess it up.. there is always next years haul .... lol ...

dont worry about it.. just do it .... its getting kind of late to be hesitating ...

I agree with the above posters, you really can't screw it up and there is not 'right' way.

Take into consideration the size of the plants as well. If the container/bed is seen from all sides it is not a big deal but if it is only seen from 3 sides, like against a wall the begonias in the front my steal the show from the impatiens in the back. Also rememeber how big they will get and give them room, you want each one to shine and show off when they are mature size.

Sounds like it will be beautiful!

Let us know what you decide!
