hi all-- sorry, i don't know the particular hybrid i have, but it a common light blue salvia that is sold as an annual in WI. it is sort of like the "firecracker" salvia, but it is much leggier and airier. (I should post a snappy, but i am so inept at that). anyhow, it's getting to the point where it's getting REALLY leggy, but it blooms from the top up. so, maybe there are two or so blooms left to open on top, but there is a long stem of spent flowers below. is it worth it to cut those last leggy blooms off at the node and try to get the nodes to produce new flowering stems? would a high P "bloom buster" fert help? would love your thoughts, especially you expert annual growers. our combination border is in beautiful form right now. wish i had the time/talent to take a nice snappy to show all of you. :)

Cutting salvia back to the leaves needs to be a routine. They will really keep blooming for a very long time....or rebloom with a whole new flush. Cut them back to the upper most set of leaves. Next time, begin dead headheading here and there much before they get so spindly. Don't be hesitant to fertilize. Producing lots of flowers takes a lot of energy.

Thank you for your response. I will be more aggressive when cutting these back next time and will lay down some fertilizer asap. I love the light green foliage coupled with the cerulean blue flowers of this particular hybrid. They are definite keepers!
