Nice. This was the variety that grew wild near our property line. I never knew it was an old heirloom type until I saw the picture in a catalog.
I think it is my favorite m.g. You can't beat that star effect.

Isn't Gradpa Ott a dark purple flowered cultivar?

Not sure, I only know the package said "Grandpa Otts" on it and these are dark purple. They look very similar to Star of Yelta, don't you think? I've been told that they are one in the same.

I have a hard time differentiating between Grandpa Otts and Star of Yelta. Be aware they freely self sow and I find them comming up in the oddest places.

beautiful!!! I have a volunteer that I can't get rid of - white and it keeps trying to choke out my other plants if I'm lax and don't stay on top of it.

Here's Grandpa Otts where it came up volunter in the alley. I just let it grow and mow around it. Vines finally reached the back side of the fence and are growing up it. I agree that GP Otts and Star of Yelta are very similar and probably the same plant with different names.

if the white volunteer has sword rather than heart shaped leaves it may very well be bindweed and you must immediately do all that is possible to rid yourself of it.

Bindweed is an aggressive plant that will take over if you let it! Will try to post pictures showing native Texas bindweed bloom and leaves. It is an Ipomoea.

Absolutely gorgeous Linda! Grandpa is a winner in my garden too, the most vigorous in my growing experience.

Wow Willie, the blossom on the Texas Bindweed looks so much like a Moonflower, don't you think? Not the leaves though, they look so big.

Linda, the White Texas Bindweed in the picture has only 1" blooms where the Moonvine is up in the 4"+ class. This is a close-up picture that does indeed give it a "mmonvine look".
