problems growing annuals

I am fairly new to serious gardening because I waited until I retired to really get with it! First year every annual I planted great...Petunias, Vinca, verbena, coleus. Second year petunias died, replanted, died again. Everything else was ok. Third year, petunias died, Vinca died. Replanted and died again. Still ok with verbena and coleus. Also have geraniums and zinnias doing fine. I know it is a fungus that is working on the petunias and vinca. Any suggestions of very hardy, disease resistant annuals that do well in heat and humidity in north Louisiana?
