Torenia - different colors and would like to preserve color

Hi,

I grew Torenia for the first time last year (Torenia Lemon Drop). I had a number of other flowers as well as some other Torenia I bought. This year I grew Torenia Lemon Drop again which by now are a foot tall.

About 3 weeks ago, I noticed a few hundred seedlings in one of my gardens. They were Torenia; so I separated and transplanted them. They are now starting to bloom, but the colors are rather different. I'd like to be able to identify the types. I'd also like to be able to preserve some of the types for next year. Could I collect seed and have the same color combos for next year? How do I collect seed from Torenia? Can you give me a title of a reference book for collecting seeds?

I have posted pictures at:

Thanks.

Seeds collected from first generation hybrid plants will not produce progeny with those exact same traits. Each subsequent generation will also produce varied characteristics.

Allow the seed heads to mature in the plant until dry. The tiny seeds are inside little 'pods'. Click for a good description.

Thank you so much. I will look forward to seeing what colors show up next year. (I really like the look of Torenia; so just having them is great.)
