Impatiens bicolor--reseeding annual

This plant apparently behaves much like its close relative Impatiens balfourii. It comes up in the Spring, spits out tons of seeds, and dies by the first frost. It comes back even in Denver and the NYC area. I gave some seeds to my uncle in Northfield, MN, but I don't know if he planted them...

This my first year with them in a frost-free area, 25 miles South of San Francisco. They are blooming and making seeds. I expect them to die sometime this Fall.

Species recently discovered in Pakistan, 2001.

That's a very pretty one. I don't know much about Impatiens and can't comment on ID accuracy, but 'Mr. Impatiens' photo of I. bicolor is quite different.

Janine,

I haven't asked Derick (Mr. Impatiens) about that, but I can assure you it's a mistake. Derick now grows Impatiens bicolor from the same source as mine. I also sent him seeds. We've communicated about it by emails, I've sent him photos of flowers, etc.

Perhaps the most direct way of showing this is by giving a link to the Impatiens Facebook site. I'm not a member of that group, but a couple other people have posted photos of Impatiens bicolor. Derick is a member of that group, and he has commented on what he believes is Impatiens bicolor--the species we are both growing.

In the link below you'll see that at a minimum Derick comments on the second post (Nhu Nguyen's as it comes up for me). And of course one of Nhu Nguyen's photos of Impatiens bicolor was chosen to be the big photo at the top of the forum right now.

Thank you Randy. Did you see in another post started by Ernie DeMarie that someone named Fazli Rehman identified it as I. bicolor subsp. bicolor? Regardless, what a nice plant. It does remind me of I. glandulifera but it doesn't look as tall (?). I haven't searched...can seeds be obtained commercially? I may have to try them.

Hi Janine,

The blog entry at the bottom may also be of interest.

I got my seeds from Ernie, who originally got them from Panayoti Kelaidis.

You may find seeds for sale occasionally if you look hard. Ernie has also distributed seeds to a couple of the seed banks: the NARGS and SRGC.

I can send you some.

Randy

It's definitely not as tall as I. glandulifera, but it is a good-sized plant.

Randy,
Thanks so much for the offer and the information. I'll contact you via email tomorrow and perhaps we can make a trade. Thanks again.
Janine
