Looking for an ID

Hi everyone. My sister out in Wichita bought this plant in a container garden. We are trying to find out what it is. The one with the dark plumes. Any idea?

Definitely a foo-foo cultivar of millet, Ken. Mine has yellow foliage and is called Jade Princess Ornamental Millet. The foliage in the pic looks more green but may be just lighting. Plumes are soft and remind me of bushy tails.

The foo foo cultivar kind. Pennesetum glaucum, perhaps Jade Princess.

who knew .. learn something new everyday .. lol ...

but are the foo-squared sterile??? ... there is a lot of seed potential on a millet ... hence the whole bird food thing ...

According to this article, the seeds won't survive freezing temps.

so then the question is... if OP in her z7 zone .. knows what a freeze is.. lol ... a freeze deep enough to kill the seeds ... meaning ... since my power of words appears to be failing right now .... my ground freezes ... i doubt the seed would winter over... but what is a freeze.. in z7 ... 15 mins at 34 degrees one night during winter ....????

Ken, you're mistaking zone 9 with zone 7. Zone 7 sees lows around 15...how much of it depends on where. In a good zone 7 winter in Arkansas/Oklahoma, abouty two weeks of nights like that.

The OP is in zone 7, but her sister in law is in Wichita, which looks like it's in zone 6. Either way, from my personal experience here in zone 7, the seeds from ornamental millet don't cause a problem with plants popping up the following season if that's what you're thinking about, Ken. I think the birds get most of them anyway. I never tried saving the seeds so I can't say whether they would come out true to the parent plant.

I have to agree...it's millet. Here's some really good information on ornamental millet, which requires different care than the millet normally raised for bird seed. It is normally grown as an annual in zones 1 through 8, though people in the warmer parts of zone 8 and through zone 11 can grow it as a perennial. There are a number of varieties and they can be planted in combination with really pretty results. Birds, will, however, still benefit from the ornamental millet seeds. Enjoy the plant and enjoy the birds!

come on up to MI ... we have about 4 months of that.. and two months with a negative in front of it.. in a bad weather ...

i get a few rogue plants plain old green ones every year ..... on my 5 acres ... enough that i recognize it.. but not enough to curse it ... lol...
