Will alyssum reseed itself?

Once the temps dropped back into the 80's although it was only 59 yesterday, will alyssum reseed itself if left in place over the winter? I have two patches of it that has been outstanding once the temps dropped to 80's that I'd like to experiment and see if it will come back in the Spring if left where it is over the winter. Has anybody had any luck doing this?

it does for me in z5 ...

and the key.. is recognizing it in spring.. lol ...

and the only solution i had was to leave the mess there all winter.. until i recognized the 50 million seedlings in late spring ...

what do you have to lose???

over the years.. mine have all defaulted to white ... those pesky genetics and all ..... with a very occasional purple grown in ... so if color is important.. you may have to get some seed for purple and winter sow them ...

Yes, it certainly does seed itself here. You may have to be patient in the spring, as the plants sometimes don't immediately appear (and of course you have to be alert to their identity). Problem is, the plants don't always appear where you want them.

correct .. its a soil temp issue for germination .... especially in my z5 MI compared to your z7 ... so it will be quite a while AFTER you see them in the stores.. that you will actually get them to flower ...

when they are about the size of a silver dollar ... on a rainy day.. just take a hand trowel and move them around .. if you wish ... and if a few die.. you will still have the other 80 million .. lol ...

You don't have to leave the dead plants in the ground all winter. When they have died back pull the plants and tap them along the ground in areas you want seedlings. The seeds will fall out and germinate in those areas next spring.

as i said.. the ONLY reason to leave it.. is so that you remember what the seedlings are.. before you dig them all up ...
