 o
Height of Zinnias

This spring I planted cut and come again zinnias. They grew to be about 5 feet tall. Is this the normal height? They looked really good, but I contantly had to stake them.

The hot pink ones I usually grow get this tall. I put tomato cages on them. Something's fouling the leaves but the butterflies are still interested in the flowers. Just to the right of center is a single plant in a tomato cage. It was taller but it's now shrinking as I remove spent blooms.

Hi,

The height of Cut-and-Come-Again zinnias is nominally 24 to 30 inches. Zinnias will "stretch" for light if they are crowded or in a spot that doesn't receive full sun. Most people, myself included, usually plant zinnias too close together.

I didn't realize "cut and come again" was a specific kind of seeds, thought it was a category of Zinnia type. My plant is violet queen I think, so not the same comparison I thought it was.

Great idea to use tomatoe cages!!!!!!!!!I will definitely do that next year.

So will I. I have two that are so tall that they've fallen over and new branches are growing upward. Maybe I have more blooms that way, though.

I just saw a zinnia that's about 7' tall! It was growing out of the edge of a tall shrub and had the support it needs.

Apparently the world record for zinnia height is over 12 feet. I have had a few six foot specimens in crowded beds.
