I have some B&B salvia in pots that I can easily over-winter in the garage, but I have a *really* big one that will be a PITA to pot up for the winter, yet I'd like to try to over-winter it. Since this is a perennial in warmer zones, do you think it would be possible to dig, shake off excess soil, and store bare-root in the crawl space, pot up in the spring?

I love Salvia, but I have absolutely no idea. If I were wondering the same thing, I would ask the Master Gardener, Karen, at my favorite garden site. They've never steered me wrong yet and it is absolutely free. If I was doing it without advice, I think I'd do what you describe, but then insulate the roots with a bit of sand or straw? Just an idea. I hope this helps.

I winter over Black and Blue salvia by cutting back and potting it up then putting in a cool dark basement room. Once a month I give it a small amount of water to keep tubers from shrinking. In the early spring I put it under lights for new growth and plant in the garden after the last frost date. Some of my plants have been wintered over three or four years. Editted to add: when I cut it back I cut it way back to just a short stem. That should make even a large one easy to pot up.
