 o
Plant Identification, please...

Hi all,
I have been admiring these white/grey plants and would like to get some for my yard next spring, so I took two pics. I don't know what they are called. I'm sure they must be an annual, and can you tell me if seeds are available to start them under lights during the winter/spring. Any other info about them would be appreciated. Thanks! Paul

Paul......they are called dusty miller.......a nice garden accent which also will flower in late summer here. There are several different varieties. They are also often used in container flower gardens.

Thanks for your help! By any chance do you know what variety this one is and can you grow them from seed?

I think that one is called silver dust. Silver lace is finer cut still. Don't pull it out and in your area it will probably come back. I have had them winter over in my area. The third year--if they get that far-- they send up an ugly flower and look scraggly.

I do start mine from seed in the greenhouse. It takes about 8 weeks to get a decent size, but I set them out when they are small. Usually near a low growing spring blooming perennial. When the perennial stops blooming the dusty miller takes over

I should have told you to give the roots a layer of mulch, to protect the them. Anything will do. I find dry leaves work for me, but be sure to remove them in the spring when the daffodils bloom.

If you are setting them out as seedlings, make sure the soil is warm. They are very hardy when they are big but not so hardy as seedlings. They will take a bit of frost though.

They are lovely plants but beware the rabbits LOVE them.

They can take light frost: we grow them as winter annuals, here. They will also survive the summer here, but usually look like they wished they hadn't. : )
To make it easier to find the seed, the species name is Senecio virens, but it's also sold as S. cineraria.
Happy hunting! : ])
