I moved into a new house this year and the porch railing is about 6' up from the sidewalk below it.
I would like to hang containers on the outside of the railing. I saw some rectangular containers at Walmart that had hooks on the back of them, I think that is what they are for.
I'm looking for something to plant in them that would cascade from the box, down the front of my porch, toward the sidewalk below.
I live in Zone 6 / West Virginia.
I have 2 hanging baskets so far. One has Heliotrope Marine in it and the other has Clove Drops in it.
I have lots of seedlings started in my kitchen for containers on my porch. Now I'd like to srart something for the "front" of the porch, if that makes any sense whatsoever.
How about some type of vine like Hyacinth Bean, or Scarlet Cardinal Climber? I know these climb, not sure if they'd hang but why not, if they go one way then they should go the other. Can you tell I'm new at container gardening? I have seedlings all over my kitchen too and I've also been winter sowing, love that forum. Hope you get more suggestions!
How about some sweet potato vines mixed in with flowers of your choice? I had some in hanging baskets and also in small windowboxes last year and they were great!
One thing that seems to cascade well is dichondra. I've seen pictures of it hanging 3' from window boxes. I'm trying silver falls dichondra this year; have some winter sown. Here's hoping.
Last year I planted a few vinca vines and they grew so long I had to trim them back because they were getting in the way of the people who live below us. They also came inside for the winter and I was able to split them and now I have 5 plants from the 2 I originally purchased.
